Rant 02: Street Fighter 4

I don't know where to start.....
I seriously have no clue....
Street Fighter 4, in my opinion, the worst Street Fighter game to date. The game was just poorly constructed, had far too much depth put into it, which in doing so, they ironically ignored the key factors that makes Street Fighter.

And such a shame, I was excited about the game, I loved Street Fighter, which is saying alot considering that I naturally suck at fighting games. I have played alot of them too.
I've play just about every fucking version of Street Fighter 2, I played Alpha 2 and 3, I've played Street Fighter 3 and plenty of crossover games. They were gold, crisp and innovative, all at the same time, they were traditional to the series.
So with a good stream of games, I naturally looked forward to the latest installment with high anticipation. It was one of the 4 games I bought with my Xbox360, along with Sonic Unleashed, Tales of Vesperia and Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.
I popped this fucker in and what was my first issue?

My first issue was the font size. It's clear that it was optimized for widescreen or high definition, both of which I don't have for a TV, so on my small 13 inch standard definition television, I couldn't read shit! Even on the downstairs TV, which has a bigger screen, I couldn't barely read anything. I was thinking to myself, "What the hell Capcom!?" I couldn't read anything, they had no good reason to display the font that small. I had to trial and error with some of the menu items to see what they do, then leave the rest up to memory. So after that, I started the game, first character I touched was the one I trusted the most, Ken. I got into a fight, has a fairly fun time, but then I came across my second issue, controls.
The controls in general weren't bad, but it was the controller. It'd hard as hell properly mapping the controls on the Control Stick and Directional Pad, it felt too loose and I had to force alot of specials.
I"m more prone to use the D-pad for fighting games like these, but the D-pad was less reliable than the Control Stick! I managed the first round though, then I got an online challenge.
I didn't know I had that feature turned on.
So I fight a match, win by chance, okay, no problem, back to the game. I do the first round vs my computer opponent when--
"A new Warrior has entered the Ring!"
Okay, what the hell? Another online challenge? This fast!? I shrugged it off and continued, got owned this time. But it's my first time playing, so I didn't take it too rough. Back to the game.
Now I see that if you get challenged online, the cpu match you're playing RESETS.
So if you're in a match vs a cpu, you win a round, and get an online challenge, the entire set goes back to 0-0, so that round you won means jack-shit. So, I'm peeved, I get back to the game and try to win the set again, I'm fighting, about to win--
"A new Warrior has entered the Ring!"
.......
................
I get owned...again.
Back to the game--FIGHT HASN'T EVEN STARTED YET!!
"A new Warrior has entered the Ring!"
I'm going to kill someone!
I get owned again.
AGAIN.
So back to the cpu matches, I get owned, so I choose to switch to Abel, he looked fun from the youtube videos I saw, I try him out. Ironically, he's the guy who owned me with rolls and short frame grabs upon me getting up.
So I'm having a good time--

I get owned.
Again.
Back to the Game. I win a few round peacefully. I get to Guile, Abel's "Rival"---

By now, I start rejecting people, I declined, went back to the game--
"A new Warrior has entered the Ring!"
It's like the game was self aware and it wanted me to get owned online.
I reject, back to th--

I'm not kidding, this isn't an exaggeration, this actually happened, upon my first time playing the game.
I reject.

I lost count of how many times I did this, I managed to beat Guile, on to Seth.
I found it impossible to beat him with Abel, the first form was easy enough, the second spited my every move, and would not let me get up. Everytime I did, he'd teleport like an asshole then do Zengief's one frame throw on me.
I fought Seth so many times, I found a striking resemblance to the Kasumi clone from Dead or Alive 4, teleports, mad ass AI, steals other peoples moves and sprinkles steroids on them--but yeah, the only difference is Seth is a guy--kinda, he's actually a robot.
So after like the 50th time losing in a row, I have to head to the store, when I got back, my Xbox was off, thanks to my nephew tripping the cord, like he was notorious for doing in my early Wii playing days. I was angry, but it gave me time to rest.
I had to have a friend tell me how to turn off the online challenges, because the text was too damn small to read on how.
So at this point, I'm like "fuck this shit" I put the game on the easiest difficulty, 1 round sets, and just start filing through the game to unlock characters, which is bullshit. You name a Street Fighter game where one third of the roster had to be unlocked and I will go to your house and paint it. This never had to be done in any of the other games!! Even boss characters were normally available from the start, and even if they had to be unlockable, that doesn't say much, because they were boss characters, here, idle participators had to be unlocked, I hated this. Capcom fucked up here, hard.
I eventually found comfort playing Fei Long and Sakura. Good for fun, but daaaamn, I haven't even started on the balance of the roster.

Bluntly put, if your name isn't Sagat, Akuma, Zangeif, or Gouken, you suck, because these characters are damn near impossible to fight against and win unless you're playing one of these characters.
It;s absolutely retarded, that's bullshit! The other Street Fighter games were balanced enough to beat anyone with anyone, now the specific level of effort needed will vary, but the possibility still remained. Now, it's you don't play these guys, you're not beating these guys. I actually went to an online Street Fighter tournament, and I bet that the higher ranking participants would all be playing Sagat (unlockable characters were banned). Needless to say, I was right, the semifinals, finals and grand finals were all motherfucking Sagat dittos.
That
is bullshit. There is no balance, I blame the 3D graphics, in the 2D games there were just basic sprites, you had them, worked with them, plain and simple, black and white.
Here, there are 3D images that are animated, now Capcom wanted to go backwards and emphasize the classic movesets, so their issue was making sure the frame rate of the 3D animations were close to the 2D sprites, this required more depth, and I say that they failed in this category. Because of frames and hitboxes, some moves just broke the game, outside the Broken 4 characters, some were equipped with moves that if spammed on a downed opponent, would guarantee victory.

You can't tech roll.
If I recall, rolling while getting up was possible in each Street Fighter game. Not 4. Oh no, not 4. You have 2 options upon getting downed. You can tech, perform a nice little ukemi get up fast, which doesn't help if you get thrown, then there is an air tech, recovering while in the air, this was more useful, but you couldn't attack after teching! Most of the stuff in this shitty game can be half justified, not this, there was no reason, why this should not be in the game, what's the point of teching in the air, if you cannot defend yourself while in the air.
There is no air guard, you're wide fucking open and you have to rely on priority, which is outdone by any anti air.
The game to too offense based, and you are completely defenseless in certain common scenarios. That's a shitload of fuck and a fuckload of shit. I hate this game!

Well you can shut the fuck up right there, I traded that son of a bitch in and got 27 bucks in cash. Best investment I made in a while, much better than buying the game in the first place.

The online competition sucks, the menu sucks, character balance sucks, the defense sucks, the roster system sucks, the only good thing about this game is the best thing about almost any Street Fighter game, Chun Li.
She is golden, even throughout a cesspool of utter bullshit.
