Rant 04 Sprite Rippers
Talk about shameless.
As many of you know, I do flash movies, it's a fun hobby to say the least, and if you pay any attention, I use sprites. I don't rip them myself, I get them from other places, my main resource is The Mystical Forest Zone, great place, a wide selection of original and edited sprites from skilled people. I love it, it allows me to add variety to my flash movie(s), one in particular be Chaos Sonic, which is going well. I'm in the middle of wrapping Chapter 3 up, which is basically a pretty epic fight scene, so I'm doing movie clips of some key animations, I tend to take a combination of several sprites to get things done, so I pick up a sheet and get to work, however there is something I noticed when working with these sprites, some of them are pretty subtle, but most of them are shameless and redundant.
Credit, they want credit for their work.
Now I never mind giving credit where credit is due, in fact I prefer to do so, even if someone does not want to be credited, I feel the need to let people know that "this" person helped me, so naturally, I wouldn't mind.
But dammit, these people really lay it on thick.
There's the normal shtick.*directly quoted--names are edited for privacy*
"Ripped and Edited by Sephiroth the Hedgehog
Give Credit if used"
Now I never mind following that, after all, I wouldn't be able to use these sprites had he not ripped them, then there are the really subtle and Modest ones
"Sonic Advance 1 sprites, ripped by Danny, if you used this, please give credit and let me know where it's used :)
email@emailsite.com"
or
"Ripped by Ham, no credit needed"
I can respect those, and thus makes me want to give credit even more, because of the modesty of these people, but sometimes, they get carries away.....
"RPG Maker Sonic sprites
Sonic- originally ripped by Danny and edited by Blitz and Dikkon Y (all other sprites were edited from my sprites!)
Knuckles- edited from Knuckles ripped by Danny and Lank
Shadow- originally ripped by Deek and edited by Dikkon Y
Metal Overlord- created by Someguy
Mighty- created by Someguy
MORE COMING RLY!"
{here's the good part}
"GIVE CREDIT OR BURN IN HELL"
Do I need to comment!? That's fucking bullshit. Seriously, "or burn in hell"!?
For one---why threaten someone? Is it supposed to scare them into crediting him or them or whoever!?
For two---what if I didn't, last time I checked it wasn't up to a bunch of nerd whether or not I get condemned.
For three---what the hell is keeping me from not giving credit!? What are the sanctions? How will I be punished? Will I get banned of the internet? By who's jurisdiction?
Seeing how there is no way I could legally be punished by not crediting them, I don't see what's stopping me, other than common courtesy.
For four---They act like they have legal claims to these copyrighted characters!! I'm sorry, but they really shouldn't do that. It's so stupid and selfish to do that, again, I don't mind giving credit, but when I'm ordered to like some little pussy ass bitch, then it makes me not want to.
Here's another one.
"IF ANYTHING ON THIS SHEET IS USED IN ANY WAY, THE PERSON USING IT MUST GIVE CREDIT AND A LINK TO MY SITE"
No.
I've used those sprites before, and credited the person who edited them and ripped them, but no way in hell am I gonna turn into an advertisement that more than likely will fail.
"XX Zone sprites
Ripped by Raindrop
Give the credit, and if this is stolen, I'll take you to this level and throw you off"
......
So wait, if I don't give credit.......it---by some logic counts as theft, despite the person ripping the sheet having no legal claim to what he most likely illegally ripped.
And if it is "stolen" he will take me to a fictional stage in a video game.....and throw me off of it.
Oh wow, I better credit him right!?
"CREDIT JAMES E.T. OR IT WILL BE CONSIDERED THEFT!"
Again, despite you editing them, they originated as sprites belonging to copyrighted characters, icons and logos, so if I don't credit you, how is it considered theft? It's not like I'm crediting myself for ripping/editing the sprites, so how am I stealing it? And what the fuck will you do if I don't? Spam my inbox with hate emails, oo-scary!
Don't fuck with this guy, he has no life so he'll spend his time stalking you, because you stole something from him, despite having no legal claim to it.
"Terms of Use: Feel free to use this sheet as you wish provided that you specifically credit me when used. Feel free to add to this sheet with your own custom made Shadow sprites in the same style . As long as you credit me, I don't mind"
Ain't that cute? He gave me rules to follow.
And he wants to specifically be credited, wow. Lets, passively credit him instead.
Also, this is an edited sheet ripped from other people, yes he gives credit, but it's not right to specifically credit him, when others contributed to the effort, that's like me taking all the credit for Chaos Sonic, even though I'm collaborating with 2 other people, who I respect as members of the SFC.
That's bullcrap!
So, it's been established that this guy is an asshole, a dictator with no power, and a selfish dick.
Nice to know, all the same he gave rules to follow, so if you don't follow them, you can't use them right? You know, it's pointless to give rules when--
A. You have no legal claim to make rules to follow
and
B. There are no consequences for breaking the rules
I just don't get. What goes through their minds when they think it's a good idea to give these rules out or threaten people to give credit, all is needed is
"Ripped by me, please give credit"
and that's it, I'll give credit no questions asked, and again, some people just do this and that's enough, but others get really stupid with it, and I'll never understand.
